Antique 36" Wooden Beetle Maul – Hand-Carved with "F.G. HAMER" – 19th Century Timber or Coopering Tool
This is a rare and impressive example of a 19th to early 20th century wooden beetle maul, measuring approximately 36 inches tall. Constructed from solid hardwood, this heavy-duty striking tool was used in traditional timber framing, cooperage (barrel making), or masonry work. The large cylindrical wooden head shows signs of heavy historical use, consistent with striking wood or stone without causing damage — ideal for seating joints, pegs, or staves.
One side is hand-carved with the name “F. G. HAMER”, likely the original owner or craftsman, adding both character and provenance. Roman numerals are also visible, possibly indicating tool inventory numbers or job-site tracking — a common practice among tradespeople of the period.
The original wood is aged beautifully, with surface cracks, tool marks, and patina that reflect its long service life. Mounted on a custom wooden display stand, this tool is not only a collectible artifact but also a stunning piece of industrial folk art.
