Antique 19th Century 4-Gallon Ovoid Salt-Glazed Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Blue Decoration
Beautiful antique American 4-gallon salt-glazed stoneware crock, believed to date to the mid-to-late 19th century (circa 1850–1890). This distinctive piece features an early ovoid form with gracefully rounded shoulders, a tapered lower body, a thick rolled rim, and applied side handles.
The light gray salt-glazed exterior is decorated with a hand-applied cobalt blue outlined numeral "4," flanked by opposing ornamental flourishes. The interior features a dark glaze, while the recessed, unglazed base displays traditional pottery construction characteristics.
Unlike more common straight-sided stoneware crocks, this example's rounded silhouette and decorative cobalt markings give it exceptional primitive country charm.
The crock exhibits age-appropriate surface wear, discoloration, and firing imperfections consistent with antique utilitarian stoneware. Maker unidentified.
An excellent addition to an antique stoneware collection, primitive farmhouse kitchen, or country home decor display.
