Exceptional antique Great Wheel (Walking Wheel) handcrafted from solid hardwood and dating to the 19th century. Unlike smaller flax spinning wheels, this oversized wheel was designed specifically for spinning wool and required the spinner to walk alongside the wheel while drawing fibers into yarn.
Standing approximately six feet tall, this impressive textile artifact features a massive hand-built drive wheel with turned spokes, traditional mortise-and-tenon construction, and a beautifully aged dark patina developed over generations of use.
Today these large walking wheels are highly sought after for farmhouse, primitive, colonial, and museum-quality decorating because of their dramatic scale and historical significance.
This example retains its original wheel, frame, and turned supports. The spindle assembly appears to be absent, making it best suited as an outstanding decorative display or restoration candidate.
